On April 28th, the Forum The Application of Artificial Intelligence in Dispute Resolution was held under the support of the Legal Innovation Diploma offered by the University Externado of Colombia.

In this academic space, professors Colin Rule, Erick Castellanos, Daniel Castaño and Luis Alfonso Gómez analized online dispute resolution and the importance of artificial intelligence in this type of process.

Professor Colin Rule, known in the industry as the godfather of online dispute resolution, founder of mediate.com and author of the book “The New Handshake” explained that dispute resolution is a psychological process to the extent that people need to feel that they are being heard, and to the point that dispute resolution systems are designed to take into account human needs so that the population can have confidence in them and there is a material justice in the resolution of cases.

Professor Daniel Castaño commented on the Colombian problem regarding Internet access and the obsolete tools used by operators when administering justice, including the problem of data collection. Also, he pointed out that artificial intelligence allows the automation of certain processes, which means that lawyers need to adopt a more creative role.

Professor Luis Alfonso Gómez, coordinator of the Legal Innovation Diploma pointed out that a change of mentality is important for law students and lawyers. Additionally, Professor Rule complemented by saying that they will be in charge of inventing the future and establishing the rules under which the world of law will be governed.

Artificial intelligence and technology in general are already transforming the world of law and should be seen as a tool rather than a threat or a problem, thus, it is necessary to train professionals trained not only in law but in innovation.
